Evaluation
There is no “pool strip” or field test for fuel quality. Our method of evaluation consists of examining color, clarity, smell, and vapor presence. While we often perform our evaluation with the fuel in the sampling tube, it is best to pour the fuel into a clear glass container, such as a mason jar – the larger the sample and the larger the container, the better.
- Color: The best quality fuel is clear in color, perhaps with a tint of blue or green. Yellow or gold fuel isacceptable also. Fuel that is the color of weak ice tea is borderline acceptable.
- Clarity: Fuel should always be clear, with no obvious sediment, cloudiness, or layering (stratification).
- Smell: Good quality fuel should have a very strong odor. There should be no smell of rust, oil, or water.
- Vapor: Dip one finger into the fuel and hold it up to the wind. The fuel should evaporate quickly andleave no residue. As well, the sample can be held up to the sunlight and vapors should be evident emanating from the top of the sample.
